Hunters Creek Award

Science invites students to ask questions, explore ideas and discover how the world works.

At Hunters Creek Elementary (HCE), a 2026 J. Landon Short Mini Grant for Educators will help bring that spirit of discovery into the classroom. Congratulations to Jessica Murphy, with Noemi Lopez and Katy Mueller, for their project, Hands-on Science.

The project focuses on an engaging approach to learning: giving students opportunities to take an active role in exploring science. Hands-on experiences help connect classroom concepts with discoveries students can investigate, discuss and build upon.

As students observe, ask questions and work through challenges, they practice more than science. They also develop the communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills that support learning across subjects.

Murphy, Lopez and Mueller’s project reflects how an educator’s idea, supported by community investment, can create new possibilities for students.
