In Spring Branch ISD (SBISD), we believe that every great future starts with a great teacher—and sometimes, the journey to becoming that teacher begins with a single moment of belief.

For Joanna DeLaFuente, that moment came through SBISD’s THRIVE program — a homegrown teacher recruitment and development initiative designed to support aspiring educators already serving in our schools.

“Thrive has provided a personalized and community-focused approach,” DeLaFuente shares. “The mentorship, coaching, and ongoing feedback made a significant difference in building my confidence and skills in the classroom.”

Transitioning into a full-time teaching role wasn’t without its challenges. As a single mom balancing new instructional strategies and responsibilities in a specialized Resource setting, DeLaFuente had to navigate both personal and professional growth. Yet, with the encouragement of her team at Hunters Creek Elementary and the entire HCE community, she found the support needed to thrive.

“There have been so many rewarding moments—from passing my Texas State Certification exams to completing the Thrive program—but the most meaningful part has been seeing my growth and my students' growth," she says. "One of my students, who once struggled with self-esteem, now raises their hand, participates, and smiles in class. That shift in a child’s outlook is why I do this work.”

For DeLaFuente, the true affirmation that she had found her calling came when a parent expressed heartfelt gratitude for making their child feel seen and valued at school.

“That moment reminded me I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be," she says.

Today, DeLaFuente hopes her students remember her as someone who believed in them, pushed them with kindness, and made them feel safe and capable. Looking ahead, she sees herself continuing to grow — pursuing additional certifications, strengthening her instructional skills, and eventually mentoring the next generation of teachers.

Her advice to anyone considering joining Thrive or stepping into education?

“Be open to learning every day, lean on your mentors, and remember that small moments can lead to big breakthroughs. Thrive will give you the tools, but your passion will drive your success.”

When asked to describe her teaching style, DeLaFuente chooses three words: compassionate, structured, and engaging. And her personal mantra when working with students says it all:

“Every child can learn, just not in the same way or on the same day.”

Teaching in SBISD, she says, is an honor.

“It means being part of a diverse, student-centered district that values growth, Every Child, and excellence. I’m proud to contribute to SBISD’s mission.”

And through her journey, Joanna DeLaFuente isn’t just thriving—she’s helping her students thrive, too.
