Literacy Specialist

Ms. Henshaw

Teaching is called a profession because the professional in that classroom has studied, experienced, and learned about that particular group of children. . . .

There is always a need to improve and we need to be challenged.

Don Graves, The Energy to Teach, Heinemann, 2001

As I reflect on the years I’ve been privileged to work with children, I realize how much they have taught me about blissful discovery, joyous delight in living, and concentrated determination.

Although I have extensive experience in primary grades and experience teaching 3rd and 5th grades, I continue to learn new things from experts, my colleagues, and the children.

I have certifications in Elementary Education with a Psychology minor and an Early Childhood endorsement from Texas A&M, Gifted and Talented certification from University of St. Thomas, and an English as a Second Language certification. Currently, I am working on a Master’s degree in Language Arts and Reading Specialist certification from University of St. Thomas.

I still feel rewarded and gratified by my profession.  I believe it is important to continue to learn. I have numerous post graduate hours and attend many workshops, conferences, and seminars in order to challenge myself and become a more effective educator. I have also been a member of a plethora of campus and district committees. The variety of committees range from campus administrative teams, technology, and language arts to team dynamics, textbook adoptions, and appraisal committees. These opportunities have provided experience and personal satisfaction.

My greatest contributions to education and the children I teach are flexibility, patience, dedication, the ability to listen, geniality, and a love of learning.

It is my hope that this literacy site will enable you to use resources that will help with lessons, ideas, and information to facilitate and support your planning.
