Speech and Language
Pathology The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) at Hunters Creek Elementary strengthens communication skills of students who need remediation in areas of articulation/phonology, fluency, voice, language and pragmatic skills. Speech-Language Pathologists work with children who have communication impairments that affect their success in academic activities and social interactions. The duties of a Speech-Language Pathologist include, but are not limited to, the following: · Identifying and evaluating students with suspected speech, language, and related disorders · Planning and conducting activities to improve a student’s speaking, listening, and other language skills · Monitoring and documenting the effectiveness of treatment and student progress · Collaborating with parents, caregivers, teachers, and other professionals in understanding and meeting a student’s speech, language, and academic needs · Writing reports and completing other required paperwork · Educating parents, teachers, and administrators about communication development and disorders Caseload considerations include: · Severity of the speech or language impairment · Effect of the problem on a student’s educational performance and social skills · Developmental stage of the problem · Relationship of the impairment to other conditions (i.e., hearing loss, mental retardation, learning disabilities, physical or other health impairments) · Type of service: individual (specialized service), small group (specialized service), classroom-based (support facilitation), consultation, or various combinations of these therapy models |
