In second grade our main
goal is for students to become independent learners and
problem solvers. Many "hands on" projects, through a variety
of media, are planned throughout the year in math, social
studies, science, and language arts to reach the multiple
intelligences of our students. During "Winds of Time" we
immerse ourselves in Ancient Greek culture. We integrate all
curriculum areas.
We are especially
concerned that students become effective communicators
through writing. We use the Writer's Workshop model to
encourage students to write original compositions using
elaboration and to edit for correct punctuation and
spelling. Daily journals and reading response journals are
used as well. Second Grade focuses on sequencing as a
pre-writing tool.
Our reading material
consists of a variety of novels, basals, non-fiction, and
trade books. Students have a free choice of books to read
daily during silent reading time. We teach phonics and word
structure through our spelling program. A variety of
learning strategies are taught in all subjects throughout
the year to give the students tools to be successful.
One of our greatest
assets is parent participation in school projects to insure
strong understanding of students and communication between
school and home. We believe our school is a special and
stronger place because of parent
involvement.
